1) Who are some artists that have inspired your songwriting and in what ways have they done so?
A few come to mind, Jackson Browne still inspires me. Mostly because I relate to his ability to share his spirituality without being preachy. I also have been inspired by John Prine, love his quirky sense of being silly and always conversational. Also I was inspired by folk singer Greg Brown and his earthy use of nature/land metaphors.
2) What are some favorite tools in your songwriting toolbox? In other words, what are some of your best go-to techniques for crafting a song?
Excellent question, I like to think of most songs being a journey with twists and turns. I especially feel third or final verses are crucial
3) How do you know when a song is working and how do you know when it is falling flat? What are the signs?
When I am moved myself by a new song I know I’m on track. If it brings a tear I know I’m on to something and my mantra is ‘follow that tear’. The best way to know if a song is connecting is play it out live at shows and get a read from the audience if they are connecting to the song.
4) What do you find most challenging and most rewarding in the songwriting process?
Most challenging is making and taking the time to sit down and begin. Sometimes that’s with my guitar sometimes it’s journaling and making a quality effort to let the magic reveal itself. Most rewarding is sharing songs live and feeling the energy of giving and receiving w people. It’s where I feel most purposeful.
