The mission of SummerSongs is to encourage, support and promote the creation of songs and the work of the songwriters, and to facilitate the inclusion of original songs in the life of communities by providing:
-
- Opportunities for live performances by songwriters,
- Networking for songwriters,
- Resources and events which promote songwriting,
- Recording opportunities to further document and disseminate the work of songwriters within their communities,
- Inspiration and encouragement for artistic expression in communities.
SummerSongs actively creates and promotes an environment that is inclusive and respectful of all people and their unique abilities. While we encourage self-expression, we ask that members of the community be respectful of others in thoughts, words, and actions.
To facilitate our mission and provide a supportive and safe environment, all participants must agree to observe these community guidelines. Failure to comply with these guidelines may be grounds for expulsion from SummerSongs without refund and/or denial of registration in the future. SummerSongs reserves the right to deny registration to any person. Illegal substances are prohibited at all times. Alcohol is prohibited at all community events.
Boundary Policy
SummerSongs encourages consideration for and from each community member when expressing ourselves to others. Community members are expected to respect the personal spaces of others and communicate our own boundary/personal space preferences. We strive to be sensitive to others and to avoid conduct that makes others feel uncomfortable.
Inclusiveness and Diversity
SummerSongs is committed to providing a welcoming and safe environment for people of all races, gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, physical abilities, physical appearances, socioeconomic backgrounds, life experiences, nationalities, ages, religions, and beliefs. Discrimination and harassment are prohibited. Harassment may include, but is not limited to, intimidation; stalking; unwanted recording or photography; inappropriate physical contact; use of sexual or discriminatory imagery, comments, or jokes; intentional or repeated misgendering; sexist, racist, ableist, body-type shaming, or otherwise discriminatory or derogatory language; unwelcome sexual attention; and aggressive or disruptive behavior.
Media Policy
At SummerSongs, the privacy of others’ music, images, video, and other creative expression is respected and protected. Ask for and gain permission before photographing or videoing people or classes at SummerSongs and before posting on social media.
Critique Policy
Kindly don’t offer critiques of anyone’s artistic endeavors unless you are specifically asked by that person to do so. If asked, we encourage the use of what we call “Stars and Wishes” for offering critiques – always offer what you like before offering constructive suggestions. As an example, “Here are two things I really like about your song: (a & b). If it were my song, I might try: (c & d).”
Presence at Camp
In order to maximize the community-building aspect of SummerSongs, it is requested that participants arrive for camp orientation. Anyone who arrives later than that without prior communication with and assent from the Executive Director may be denied attendance.
