Cyd Smith

I started out as a classic guitarist, but somewhere in San Francisco I was lured away by the soulfulness and sheer fun of playing American roots music. Bluegrass, old country, jug band, swing jazz--all that great stuff. Over the years I’ve lived in many corners of this country, playing with different bands—contradance music in Boston with Matt Glaser and Russ Barenberg, swing music with The Wholly Cats, Bob Brozman, and many others in the Northwest, bluegrass with Laurie Lewis in the Bay Area. I’ve also become very fond of writing my own songs. Back in 1992 I recorded some of them on the album that is playing here. It features many great musicians, such as Nova Devonie (acc), Michael Dunn (gtr), Paul Elliott (vln), Cary Black (bs), Denney Goodhew (sx), John Miller (gtr), Bob Brozman (sl gtr), Kim Scanlon (vcls) and even Mr. Joe Pass himself. I still love the music that’s on this album, but I am hoping to record a new one soon. I have a bunch of new songs that I’m excited about! "An extremely gifted songwriter from the Northwest, Cyd Smith sometimes sounds like a missing Roche sister on her fine self-produced CD." --The Bay Area Guardian
